Learning Through Nature’ Associations

Midlands Meander Education Project (MMEP)
This KZN Midlands project has been in action for thirteen years and was developed in a response to difficulties facing the education system. Their programmes strengthen the work the teachers are doing and address the gaps in education. The aims are to engage learners through creative lessons and to bring learning to life and in so doing, develop nurturing, capable, confident and enquiring minded children to become active citizens in their communities and for the environment.

Jeanette has been informally associated with the MMEP for a number of years. During 2015 she was a co-facilitator on the Lisakhanya project and is presently the vice-chairperson of the MMEP.

SISONKE
This is a community networking forum of dedicated people who comprise of social workers and teachers from Mpophomeni, Howick and Mooi River. Sisonke means together and together this strong network of people helps each other when referring children and families in need to organisations which can best provide urgent help.

Jeanette’s association with this forum is as an informal observer and supporter.

Midland Environmental Education Forum (MEEF)
This is an informal association of the various entities working in the KZN Midlands area with a common link of environmental education (although this also includes aspects such as food security, social issues and animal welfare)

Jeanette is member of this forum.

Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA)
The priorities of WESSA include the international projects of Eco-Schools, Blue Flag and Green Key; environmental education and skills development training; the conservation of life-supporting biodiversity and water resources; climate change mitigation and adaptation; and environmental governance.

Jeanette’s association with WESSA was as an employee from 1995 – 2009. She is now involved in the SustainEd programme as an assessor and moderator.

INKWAZI LEARNING NETWORK
This is an accredited training provider with the ETDP SETA and is based in Howick. They present courses for adults aiming at developing people who can play a vital role in the South African education system. They also provide remedial education for children.

Jeanette is an associate assessor and moderator with Inkwazi Learning Network.

iQOTE
This company provides a range of services which include writing of accredited learning materials, accreditation of training providers, research – from needs analyses to policy and position papers, web design, writing proposals and carbon auditing.

Jeanette is associated with iQOTE as an assessor and moderator.

LIMA RURAL DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION
Over the past 27 years Lima has lead rural development in South Africa, and is celebrating the role of dignity in promoting social change. With their shared commitment to social justice, Lima’s central objective is the development of people. They believe that alleviating poverty and creating social change is only possible when we honour and acknowledge the dignity and intrinsic worth of our fellow humans – regardless of race, gender, age, income, religion or disability.

Jeanette’s association with Lima during 2013 and 2014 was to accredit the company as a training provider. She is also the proud sister of the managing director.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA (UNISA) – NATURE CONSERVATION
Jeanette’s association with UNISA has been a long one, starting as a Nature Conservation student in 1989, and then becoming a marker of assignments and exam scripts, tutor, e-tutor, development of tutorial guides and writer of study guides.
